Weariness
There’s a normal tiredness after a day of activity. But when we are weary – bone tired and drooping in spirit, we need more than a good night’s sleep. We need a word from the Lord that lifts us above the overwhelming discouragement that wears down our souls. We’ve all been there, haven’t we?
Here’s a shot of encouragement from the Apostle Paul (Galatians 6:9). KJV: “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” WEB: “Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.” YLT: “ and in the doing good we may not be faint-hearted, for at the proper time we shall reap — not desponding.”
No matter what translation we look at, the message is the same. And it’s clear that once we have planted the seeds and watered them faithfully, God will bring about the harvest. The end results are not up to us. When we do what He asks in His way and time, then we wait. Can’t you picture yourself looking anxiously at a plot of dirt that looks totally unresponsive after you have worked your head off to do the right thing? Don’t worry. Don’t be discouraged. God is doing a work that may be hidden from our sight for now. Time will reveal what that work will accomplish.
Here’s another word from Paul along the same line. 1 Corinthians 15:58 says: “… be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” See? There is light at the end of the tunnel.
I think I’ll send these verses to a pastor friend of mine. Of course He knows them, but maybe he just needs a friendly reminder and a word of encouragement today. Have you been renewed by these scriptures? How about passing them along to someone who needs to be reminded of them, too?
Note: KJV (King James Version); WEB (World English Bible); YLT (Young’s Literal Translation).
Another great blog post, Donna!
I don’t know if I was the “pastor friend” you were thinking of but it’s always encouraging to be reminded of these verses. Thank you! 🙂
