The Conductor

When my husband and I were on our honeymoon, we went to the old Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. We got last minute seats, which were supposedly in an undesirable location because they were near the front on the left hand side of the orchestra pit. Actually, we thought they were great seats because we had a good view of the orchestra, as well as the conductor, and most of the stage.

Even now, when we go to symphony concerts, our favorite seats are on the left side looking over the stage. That way we get a wonderful view of the conductor. Much better than watching him from behind.

When directing a choir at Columbia International University, where I taught in the 90’s, a young lady joined the group because she wanted to see me from “the other side” to discover what I was doing to get such a response from the group. That was a compliment for me.

A good conductor is fascinating to watch. Without making a sound, he directs, controls, and inspires his or her musicians to make beautiful music. He is silent. He or she is fulfilled by making music through others.

Isn’t that a beautiful picture of what God does? He gathers a group of people willing to follow Him. He instructs them, nurtures them, inspires them to be the best that they can in order to accomplish their goals. They make beautiful music together that moves the hearts of many who observe and listen. The Lord doesn’t always speak (or sing) audibly, but is pleased to speak through His followers.

It gives me joy and fulfillment to be part of God’s choir/orchestra. I am humbled that He chose me to be a part of this extension of Himself to speak to the world around me. It takes submission and cooperation on my part. But it’s worth every moment. Look at who the conductor is!
