Father’s Day

Today, as I am writing, we are wrapping up another Father’s Day. It has been a good day at church and with family. I’ve enjoyed being with my husband and son, who are both good fathers.

Over the last few days, I have been thinking a lot about my father, who has been gone from this earth for many years now. The memories of him are still clear and fresh, though. He was a man of God, loved by all of his family and friends. He was quiet, considerate, patient, kind, disciplined, strong, and peaceable. Not perfect, of course; but you couldn’t find much fault in him. How fortunate I was to be his daughter!

Not everyone has had such an experience. What can I say to those who had (or have) an earthly father who just was a total disappointment? There may be nothing positive to say about a man who is such a failure. So, unfortunately, Father’s Day is not so special in some families.

But let’s consider celebrating Father’s Day as a time to relate and to reflect on our Heavenly Father. If you are a child of God, your Father is loving, patient, kind, gracious, merciful. In fact, He is perfect. Who are we to deserve a relationship with Him? Of course, it has nothing to do with deserving anything. It only has to do with His choice to embrace us as His children.

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! (I John 3:1, NIV). I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty (II Corinthians 6:18, ESV).

Wow! We can celebrate Father’s Day every day, don’t you think?
