Morning

Ah . . . morning . . . Not my favorite time of day. Maybe you think that musicians get up with happy little songs floating in their minds. Well, not this one. At least, it didn’t used to be that way. But an appreciation for morning has kind of grown on me.

I still have trouble getting my creaky bones going in the early hours. But I’ve learned to make it my habit to spend a few moments talking to God and thanking Him for the privilege of embarking on a new day. That attitude makes a positive difference.

Several years ago I was contemplating my outlook on mornings and challenged myself with these poetic thoughts. “Morning peeks in the window, then tiptoes into the room, inviting me to gratefully enjoy the possibilities in bloom. I cannot afford to ignore them by turning away with a groan. They are mine alone to cultivate…’til their fruit is finally known.”

Today I’m featuring a song written by a dear friend of mine, Ken Medema. It’s simply called “Morning.” Since Ken has been blind since birth, he has a delightful take on morning through his other senses, especially his keen hearing. I enjoyed recording this with Ken back when my voice was still soaring up in the rafters. When I listen to it, I’m still reminded to be thankful to God.

Isaiah speaks of the Lord this way: “He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught” (Isaiah 50:4, NIV). Sounds like a good way to start the day, doesn’t it? How did your day begin?
