Skies

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Those familiar words are, of course, from Genesis 1:1. Never am I more aware of the skies above me than when I’m in Colorado. The heavens just seem bigger there. More dramatic. More beautiful. My husband and I just returned from a trip to our favorite state and the broad, lofty skies are fresh in my memory.

What do you see when you look up? Do the skies speak to you of God and His creation? The Psalmist said, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1, NIV). Are you watching and listening to what they have to tell you? No matter where we are in the world, their silent voice can be heard.

“Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies” (Psalm 36:5).

“For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies” (Psalm 57:10).

“For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord? Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?” (Psalm 89:6).

“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens” (Psalm 8:1).

“The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all peoples see his glory” (Psalm 97:6).

“For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him” (Psalm 103:11).

Look up. Do the skies remind you of the vastness of God’s love? No matter what color they are right now, they are there. Every day they tell us that the God who created them is still in control. Every night the stars remind us that the God who flung them into space with His voice still speaks into our night with calm assurance. We may be a finite speck in His infinite creation, but He sees us, calls us by name, and loves us with eternal, intense compassion. What are the skies telling you today?
