A Legacy
I’m reading the final book in a series by Michael Phillips called “Secrets of the Shetlands.” This third in the series is titled The Legacy, It deals with what a young woman discovers about her heritage and how it changes her life. It has caused me to reflect on what I am leaving for the next generations who follow.
Some people are concerned about leaving a good chunk of money or a big house. I’ve never had a lot of material things, so I’ve tried to think of other things that are of value to leave to my children and grandchildren. I will pass on the godly heritage handed down to me from my parents and grandparents, even great-great-great parents from the past. That’s a heritage of beliefs centered in Christ that are at the core of everyday life.
But each person, I believe, can do something unique. My contribution involves paintings, wood working, writings, and recordings. I published a book of my songs called “Legacy.” (You can order one if you request it.) Also, my latest recording is a CD entitled “A Grandmother’s Legacy.” I know CD’s are practically obsolete now, but the recording is preserved on my website, so it’s accessible to everyone via computer or phone. Every time a new baby is born in our family, I write a poem that will hopefully continue to encourage and challenge them throughout their lifetime.
Now, the question is: What can you leave as a legacy? You may not be an artist or musician or a poet. But you can do something. What you do will be uniquely yours to pass on. Maybe you could write a letter to a newborn or his or her parents. You could keep a journal that expresses not only what has happened in your life, but the lessons you have learned from your experiences. If you like to cook or bake, hand down a collection of your favorite recipes. Or a photo album or coin collection or a library of special books. How about writing a letter to each person in your family for Christmas?
You get the idea? Anything can be a treasure to those who come after you. It may not seem like a treasure at the time. It may even be rejected, but at least you did what you could to influence the next generations. I have a poem and a letter written by my grandmother that I treasure. It was found in my mom’s stuff after she passed away.
Here’s another idea. Write out (or type) your favorite Bible verses and maybe even a note about why they are special to you. Who knows how that could influence another person. I’d love to hear from you about what kind of legacy you have in mind.
