Pass It On

It’s nice to participate in a series of passing along blessings. The other day at the grocery store (Aldi) someone let us take their cart without paying the usual quarter, so when we came out, we passed along the favor to another person who needed it. It just so happened that the next people who came along were friends of ours. How fun! Even little things like that can give someone a lift, so we need to take every opportunity to start a chain of good deeds or be in the middle of one.

We used to sing a song called “Pass It On.” Remember that one? “It only takes a spark

to get a fire going, And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing. That’s how it is with God’s love once you’ve experienced it. You spread His love to ev’ryone. You want to pass it on” (Words and music by Kurt Kaiser).

This morning I read these verses that got me thinking about this process. In God’s economy, passing it on can have a profound impact. Paul, who knew what it was to suffer lots of difficulties, wrote these words in II Corinthians 1:3-4. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

This chain starts with God Himself bestowing on us more than we deserve. Then we are challenged to pass along the loving comfort that He has shown to us. Who can you bless today with a word of encouragement or an act of kindness? Don’t we all need a little (or lots) of comfort sometimes?
