Keen Senses
God has graciously created us with five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. I try not to take these for granted because they could be dulled or taken away at any time. I guess I’m more aware of that lately because my husband has lost his sense of taste. It makes eating a chore instead of a delight. I cherish these gifts and want to keep them keen and sharp, not only for my pleasure, but for His honor.
Did you know that the Bible mentions each of these senses in relation to our Lord, who possess them to perfection? Let me illustrate what I mean. Sight: When God spoke to Hagar in the desert, she said, “You are the God who sees me,” (Genesis 16:13, NIV), and
Psalm 14:2 says, “The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.”
Sound: Psalm 145:19 says, “He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.”
Smell: After the flood was over, Noah built an altar and sacrificed to the Lord in thanksgiving. The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans…“ (Genesis 8:21).
Taste: On the other hand, the Lord is not pleased with the taste of mediocrity or lethargy. He savors full, enthusiastic commitment. According to Revelation 3:14-16, These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Touch: Consider these verses: Psalm 104:32 (NKJV) – He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the hills, and they smoke , and I Samuel 10:26 – And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and valiant men went with him, whose hearts God had touched.
Of course, all of these illustrations deal with imagery, or spiritual senses. But when Jesus was on earth, He was God who physically embodied all of these senses. He touched many with a healing touch.
Have you ever longed for God’s touch? Oh, it’s not always a physical touch that we need, but a spiritual one. A touch that moves our spirits to invigorate us and make us all that we can be. I’m praying for a new awakening to God’s touch. Anyone care to join me?
