Play “Serenity”

Previously I have always made sure that I included a few bright, up-tempo songs on each recording for variety. This time the selections are all calm and slow. Why this choice of songs? Why now? Maybe it’s because i’ve slowed down quite a bit at this “mature” stage of life. Maybe it’s the desperate need for peace in this chaotic world. Maybe it’s that there’s enough of the hype and high energy music whirling around us. Maybe it’s that I enjoy quite reflection. Maybe it’s that I’m thankful to hear guests say that they find my home a place of peace.

It’s probably all of the above. And hopefully it’s the prompting of the Spirit of God, who is the Great Comforter. May your heart be encouraged and your soul be soothed as you listen. In the midst of life’s turmoil may you experience a portion of God’s sacred SERENITY.

In the Palms of My Hands

In a world of desolation
Where hope is hard to find,
Hear the words of a loving Father
Whose compassion is ever true:
“Can a mother forget her baby?
Is all compassion gone?
If ever it is so, listen and know
That I will not forget you!”

CHORUS:
“I have engraved you on the palms of my hands,
The very palms of my hands.
There you will be for all eternity –
A constant reminder of my promise to you.
I have engraved you on the palms of my hands,
The tender palms of my hands.
Nothing will erase the image that I trace.
You are ever in the palms of my hands.”

In a world of disappointment
Where friends may let you down,
Hear the words of a loving Savior
Whose promise is ever new:
“A friend may yet forsake you
And leave you on your own;
But if ever it is so, listen and know
That I will not forsake you!”

CHORUS

My Shepherd

The Lord has led me in pleasant pastures.
He has led me by quiet streams;
Over mountains and thru dark valleys,
Where death’s shadow smothered my dreams.
But as He leads me, He restores me,
Brings sweet comfort to my soul.
I will follow; I will follow.
I will follow Him forever to the heavenly goal.

The Lord has led me in paths of rightness.
He has led me to tables grand
Where I’ve feasted on His provision,
Tho’ surrounded by Satan’s band.
So as He leads me to the future
I will fear not, for I know
That His goodness and His mercy
Will follow me forever, wherever I go.

Blessed Shepherd! Faithful Shepherd!
He is more than life to me!
I will follow; I will follow.
I will follow my dear Shepherd as on we go.

Where Is God?

Where is God when I don’t feel Him near me?
Where is God when I don’t feel His touch?
Where is God? Can He still hear me?
Doesn’t He know that I need Him so much?

Is He gone away? No, He is ev’rywhere.
Is He asleep? No, He never slumbers.
Is He deaf? No, never at all.
I know He’s listening to my call.

Promises, promises assure me God is here.
Promises that never have failed through the years.
Faith in those promises doesn’t come through a feeling.
Will I believe them? Yes, I’ll believe them.
I will believe God is here.

Just As I Am

Just as I am, Lord, without a plea
Except Thy blood shed for me.
As Thou dost call me to Calvary,
O Lamb of God, I come to Thee.

Just as I am, Lord, poor, wretched, blind.
Sight, riches, healing of the mind –
Yes all I need in Thee I find.
O Lamb of God, I come to Thee.

O Lamb of God, the living Way,
I come to Thee, Thy will obey.
Forgive my sins, Lord, I humbly pray.
O Lamb of God, I come.

Just as I am, Lord, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve.
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, dear Lamb of God,
O Lamb of God, I come to Thee.

Listening

Lord, I long to hear Your still, small voice
Speaking to me.
Lord, I need to make a very difficult choice.
I’m listening quietly.

Please, Lord, I need You;
Indeed You are wise.
So whisper Your will to me
And make that will my prize.

Lord, I long to hear Your still, small voice
Speaking to me.
Lord, I need to make a very difficult choice.
I’m listening quietly.

But my ears are dull,
And my eyes are dim.
The battle has taken its toll.
My strength is nearly gone,
Lord, I need You
To lead me to the goal.

Lord, I long to hear Your still, small voice
Speaking to me.
Lord, I need to make a very difficult choice.
I’m listening, listening,
Lord, please open my ears a little wider;
I’m listening, listening,
Listening to You.

Teach Me, Lord

Teach me, Lord, to walk in Your ways.
O teach me, Lord, to hear the things You say;
And teach me, Lord, to gladly obey Your will.

Use me, Lord, I humbly pray.
O use me, Lord, as Your vessel of clay.
Please use me, Lord, to patiently convey
Your love ev’ryday.

Only then will I be satisfied.
Only then will I be free from pride.
You are my King, my Lord and my Guide.
Please show me the way to go.

O teach me, Lord, to walk in Your way.
O teach me, Lord, to hear the things You say;
And teach me, Lord, to gladly obey Your will.

Welcome, Sweet Trial

Welcome, Sweet Trial. Welcome to my life.
I’ve thrown out the weapons
That would shield me from your knife.
So cut where it’s needful;
Pierce me, tho I bleed;
Then gently bind up the wounds,
For you know my deepest need.
Heal me and raise me up;
Make me stronger than before.
I fear not your entrance.
I’ve opened wide the door.
Welcome, Sweet Trial. Welcome, Gift of Love.
God, in His wisdom has sent you from above.

Welcome, Sweet Trial. Welcome indeed.
In counting your rich reward,
From poverty I’m freed.
So come, I will count the joy
Waiting at the end;
Then gently mix in the sorrow
To obtain the sweetest blend.
Hold me and lift me up;
Give me grace for ev’ry day
To reach faith’s objective
With patience on the way.
Welcome, Sweet Trial. Welcome, Gift of Love.
God, in His wisdom has sent you from above.

Under His Wings

Under His wings I am safely abiding,
Tho the night deepens and tempests are wild;
Still I can trust Him, I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me and I am His child.

CHORUS:
Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.

Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort and there I am blest.

Come Away

“Come away, my beloved,”
the Lord calls to me.
“Come away to a place
where your heart will be set free
From the problems and distractions
and the cares that weigh you down.
Come away with Me and find rest.

“Feast your hungry soul on the finest food.
Quench your thirst at my living springs!
Fill your emptiness with all that I am
’Til your sad heart suddenly sings!”

“Come away, my beloved,”

Looking Back

Amidst the noise and hustle and bustle of life, we need some quiet reflection. Some serenity. That’s what is offered in this peaceful collection of songs – some I wrote and some old hymns I arranged. This is a mix of vocal and piano solos that are an alternative to the hype and volume of much of the music around us these days. This was recorded in Rhode Island when we were living in our “cabin in the woods.”
