Together

(A Wedding Song)

God has brought us together
With a special purpose for this hour.
He desires to fill us
With His almighty pow’r.
Chosen now to serve Him –
Ev’ry one of us in a special way,
Joined in love,
Born from above.
We are His today.

Here we live;
Here we give
of ourselves to meet each need.
Here we grow;
Here we know
that together we can plead
For the grace to bear the burdens,
And the strength to do God’s will.

God has brought us together
With a special purpose for this hour.
He desires to fill us
With His almighty pow’r.
Chosen now to serve Him –
Ev’ry one of us in a special way,
Joined in love,
Born from above.
We are His today.

O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus

O the deep, deep love of Jesus,
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free!
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me!
Underneath me, all around me,
Is the current of Thy love –
Leading onward, leading homeward,
To Thy glorious rest above!

O the deep, deep love of Jesus,
Love of ev’ry love the best!
’Tis an ocean vast of blessing,
’Tis a haven sweet of rest!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus –
’Tis a heav’n of heav’ns to me;
And it lifts me up to glory,
For it lifts me up to Thee!

How Often?

How often have I failed, Lord,
to love You as I should?
How often have I failed to go Your way?
How often have I doubted
Your promises to me?
Too often – that’s all I can say.

CHORUS:
But You, Lord, how often have You failed me?
How often have You turned Your love away?
Never, oh never!
Never have You failed.
I can trust You day after day.

How often have I failed, Lord,
to give You of my best?
How often have I wished to run away?
How often have I weakened
and given up all hope?
Too often – that’s all I can say.

Flee As a Bird

Flee as a bird to the mountain,
Thou who art weary of sin.
Go to the clear flowing fountain,
Where you may wash and be clean.
Fly, for the avenger is near thee;
Call, and the Savior will hear thee.
He on His bosom will bear thee,
O thou who art weary of sin.

He is the bountiful giver.
Now unto Him draw near.
Peace then shall flow like a river.
Thou shalt be saved from thy fear.
Haste, then, the hours are flying;
Spend not the moments in sighing.
Cease from your sorrow and crying;
The Savior will wipe every tear.

I Will Greet the Day with Singing

CHORUS:
I will greet the day with singing, I will meet the dawn with joy.
I will praise the Lord of Life all day long!
I will greet the day with singing, I will meet the dawn with joy,
For the Lord has put within my heart a song.

Each day is like a new adventure, I am never bored;
The little things in life have meaning since I’ve known the Lord.
In Him I’m finding great fulfillment, life seems so worthwhile!
So in spite of difficulties, I have learned to smile.

CHORUS

I know a day is never perfect; problems come and go.
The Lord has promised to be with me, and I’ve found it so.
With Him all things in life have meaning, God is in control!
So a song of joy is planted deep within my soul.

The Mercies of God

The mercies of God! What a theme for my song,
Oh! I never could number them o’er;
They’re more than the stars in the heavenly dome
Or the sands of the wave-beaten shore.

CHORUS
For mercies so great, what return can I make?
For mercies so constant and sure?
I’ll love Him, I’ll serve Him with all that I have
As long as my life shall endure.

His angels of mercy encompass me ’round,
Wheresoever my pathway may lead;
Each turn of the road some new token reveals –
Oh! For me life is blessed indeed.

Where Is God?

Where is God when I don’t feel Him near me?
Where is God when I don’t feel His touch?
Where is God? Can He still hear me?
Doesn’t He know that I need Him so much?

Is He gone away? No, He is ev’rywhere.
Is He asleep? No, He never slumbers.
Is He deaf? No, never at all.
I know He’s listening to my call.

Promises, promises assure me God is here.
Promises that never have failed through the years.
Faith in those promises doesn’t come through a feeling.
Will I believe them? Yes, I’ll believe them.
I will believe God is here.

Does Jesus Care?

Does Jesus care when my heart is pained
Too deeply for mirth and song;
As the burdens press, and the cares distress,
And the way grows weary and long?

CHORUS:
Oh, yes, He cares; I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Savior cares.

Does Jesus care when my way is dark
With a nameless dread and fear?
As the daylight fades into deep night shades,
Does He care enough to be near?

Thinkin’ of Goin’ Home

Sometimes the way grows weary
And the road gets a little rough,
And the strength to carry on is runnin’ low;
But then I think of journey’s end,
And the joy of it is enough
To keep me goin’, always knowin’
Where I’m gonna go.

CHORUS:
Thinkin’ of goin’ home
And knowin’ I’m not alone
Keeps me pressin’ along
And singin’ a song of hope!
Thinkin’ of goin’ home,
Thinkin’ of goin’ home
Keeps me singin’, faith it’s bringin’,
I am goin’ home.

Loved ones have gone before me.
They are now in that heavenly land,
Where the struggles of this life are left behind.
And someday I will join them there
To see what the Lord has planned.
O happy day! Cares, flee away!
Heaven’s on my mind.

Welcome, Sweet Trial

Welcome, Sweet Trial. Welcome to my life.
I’ve thrown out the weapons
That would shield me from your knife.
So cut where it’s needful;
Pierce me, tho I bleed;
Then gently bind up the wounds,
For you know my deepest need.
Heal me and raise me up;
Make me stronger than before.
I fear not your entrance.
I’ve opened wide the door.
Welcome, Sweet Trial. Welcome, Gift of Love.
God, in His wisdom, has sent you from above.

Welcome, Sweet Trial. Welcome indeed.
In counting your rich reward,
From poverty I’m freed.
So come, I will count the joy
Waiting at the end;
Then gently mix in the sorrow
To obtain the sweetest blend.
Hold me and lift me up;
Give me grace for ev’ry day
To reach faith’s objective
With patience on the way.
Welcome, Sweet Trial. Welcome, Gift of Love.
God, in His wisdom, has sent you from above.

You Are the One

You are the One that my heart can turn to
in sorrow or in joy;
For You are always near,
and You will always care.
You are the One who will always understand,
And will always hold my hand
when the dark clouds are there;
And You whisper in the stillness,
“I will ev’ry burden bear.”

CHORUS:
I believe in You , Lord;
I believe right now.
Take this confusion
And bring to me Your peace.
I am trusting only You, my Lord;
Trusting only You.

You are the One that my heart can turn to
when others turn away;
For You alone can know
and all my fears relieve.
You are the One who will always understand,
And will always hold my hand
Tho’ the tempter deceive;
And You whisper in the stillness,
“Let your heart in Me believe.”

Looking Back

Recorded at Northwestern College Radio Network in the 80’s. It was great to work at a radio station (KTIS) where I could record my new songs and arrangements as they were born. There were struggles connected with carving out my first full time career as a musician, and that gave birth to songs that reflected the challenges and growth in my walk with the Lord. I also directed a group called “Communique Singers” who recorded some of my choral arrangements. Thanks to Curt Olson who engineered these projects. I’m thankful for the privilege of serving at Northwestern College (now University of Northwestern St. Paul) in the 80’s.
