Talking to God

Prayer is really talking to God. Isn’t it amazing that He can listen to thousands, even millions, of prayers lifted to Him at the same time from all over this globe? It’s beyond my comprehension, but I believe it’s true.

Many books have been written on prayer. What to say. How to say it. When to pray. Why we need to pray. But maybe we have over complicated it. It’s a simple act. Talking to God from the heart … about anything … anywhere … anytime. It’s an amazing privilege to speak to the Almighty. Sometimes we just need to quiet our hearts and listen to His still small voice. Sometimes we cry out to Him in emergency situations. And sometimes we don’t even have words to express what’s on our hearts. Even then He hears and understands.

Romans 8:26 assures us of wordless connection. “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (NIV).

Colossians 4:2 encourages and challenges us to pray. “Always maintain the habit of prayer: be both alert and thankful as you pray” (J. B. Phillips). There are so many things and people to pray for that I’m sometimes overwhelmed and tempted to give up. But then I’m reminded of the words of I Thessalonians 5:17. “Pray without ceasing” (NKJV). Other translations say “Never stop praying” (J. B. Phillips). Or “be unceasing and persistent in prayer” (Amplified Bible).

As I’ve been recuperating from an injury that kind of laid me up for a while, I’ve had lots of time to think and pray. I must admit that sometimes I’m too lazy to concentrate on prayer, and I let my mind cop out by watching television. But I hope to keep learning and keep determining to be more consistent and persistent in interceding for whomever is on my mind. I thank you for your prayers for me and I likewise pray for you today. Let me know if there are specific needs you want to share.

In general, here’s my prayer for you today: “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe” (Ephesians 1:17-19, NIV).

What is your sincere prayer today? Don’t give up. Aren’t you glad the Lord is listening?
