Trivia

Whenever we visited my retired parents in their later years, I got a kick out of them faithfully watching their game shows. They never missed “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy.” I couldn’t quite embrace their interest back then, but now I get it. My husband and I watch both of these shows almost every evening. It’s actually nostalgic and entertaining to me. I can hardly believe how much trivia those Jeopardy contestants know! About every subject under the sun!

There seems to be a fascination for all kinds of trivia nowadays. There are many kinds of trivia games to be had. Trivial Pursuit. Bible Trivia. Football Trivia. Music Trivia. And many more. What is trivia? The dictionary says it’s “pieces of information of little importance or value.” But to someone those facts were important at some time.

I’m wondering if anything is trivial to God. I think He made sure that the Jewish people kept track of all kinds of things that might seem trivial to us. All those genealogies are there for a purpose. And numbers related to battles are carefully recorded. And God was very clear in prescribing the measurements of the tabernacle and the temple. Nothing seems to escape His attention. That can be scary or comforting. Actually, I’m glad that God knows everything. I don’t have to worry that He will miss a thing.

In Psalm 139:1-2, David says, “O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You discern my thoughts from afar.” Just think. That applies to billions of people who are alive today, as well as all who have ever lived on this earth. He not only knows about people, but He knows the stars by name – so many that we could never count them.

Psalm 147:4 tells us “He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them.”

I was thinking about all this when I wrote this poem years ago.
I’m just a tiny speck of dust travelling through space and time.
I’m going around in circles now, but I’m bound for realms sublime.
This tiny little planet which constitutes our world
Is just part of the magnificence that God one day unfurled.
Tho insignificant I seem when galaxies I see –
How reassuring is God’s Word: that He still cares for me.

Aren’t you glad that God knows and cares about all that is happening to you?
