Only God

Only God could fling the galaxies into the empty caverns of space. Only a grand God would give us a glimpse of His creativity in the grandeur of a sunset or an ocean or the Grand Canyon. Only a giving God would share the intricacies of His mind by letting us view a butterfly or a massive field of wild flowers. (When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? – Psalm 8:3-4, NKJV).

Only a good God would seek us out when we were sinful rebels and find a way to make us His new creation, transformed by His power. Only the Good Shepherd would search for His wandering sheep until He found him and picked him up and carried him in his arms till he was safely home. (The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. He shall feed His flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs with His arms, and carry them in His bosom – Luke 19:10, John 10:11, Isaiah 40:11, NKJV).

Only a gracious God would open up the storehouses of heaven and lavish on us thousands of benefits we don’t deserve. Only He would send His own precious Son into the world in order to bear the penalty of sin. Only by His grace does He continue to shower us with good things as He prepares us for glory. (He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? – Romans 8:32, NKJV).

Only a glorious God would share His glory by preparing golden streets and grand dwelling places for His children to enjoy forever in His heavenly home. (I am coming again to welcome you into my own home, so that you may be where I am. The street of the city was purest gold, gleaming like glass – John 14:4, Revelation 21:21, J. B. Phillips).

In the light of all this, how can we be discouraged or live defeated lives? I’m often reminded of the words of the Psalmist when he questioned: “Why are you cast down, o my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God” (Psalm 42:11, ESV). Only God can provide all that we need – now and for eternity. Are you trusting Him? Only Him?
