Empty
Did you ever run out of gas? I almost did one time. I was travelling from Colorado to California and didn’t anticipate the barren miles I was about to cross. I should have filled up before I left Colorado, but failed to do so. The miles across Utah stretched on and on, with no gas stations around. Running on fumes, I finally found a sign for a town and headed for it, not sure of what such a small town would offer. Fortunately, my prayers were answered and there was an old gas station a few miles off the highway. God only knows what would have happened if I had run out in that wilderness. We didn’t have a cell phone back then. Young people don’t know what that’s like. But have you ever wondered how much better we would function if we relied on God instead of a cell phone?
Sometimes we run out of gas, spiritually speaking. Some have never had their “tank” filled by the Lord and are perpetually empty. Like the woman at the well, they are searching to fill the inner void with things that can never satisfy. That’s what Richard Blanchard wrote about in this song from the 50s. “Fill my cup, Lord; I lift it up Lord;
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul. Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more. Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole.”
But some of us who have been filled up over and over with the heavenly water that Christ offers find ourselves, on occasion, weary and worn and needing a fresh filling from the fountain that never runs dry. It’s amazing, but true, that God delights in our coming to Him once again to revive our spirits with His living water.
Isaiah 44:3 – “For I will pour water on him who is thirsty.”
Psalm 36:7-8 – “How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.
They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.”
Isaiah 55:1 – “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”
Are you running on empty today? Need a refill? Don’t you think He will give what He promised?
