A Minority

Sometimes it’s good to be part of a minority. Sometimes we want to be part of a majority. It depends on the issue, of course. With Thanksgiving coming this week, I’m reminded of a minority that I want to be part of.

There’s a story in the life of Jesus about a bunch of lepers that He healed. It’s not my favorite story because it’s kind of sad. Jesus chose to heal 10 people who begged for His mercy. Only one of them took time to come back to thank Him. The rest went merrily on their way. You can read the whole story in Luke 17:11-19.

One out of ten. That’s definitely a minority. And one I want to be part of. While millions of Americans will observe Thanksgiving this week, only a small minority will take time to give thanks where thanks is due. God is ignored by most. They don’t realize that what they enjoy is a heavenly provision. Yes, we may have worked for some of it. But who gives us the opportunity to work? Who gives us the health to be able to work? Who created all the plants and animals that become part of our feast? Who but God?

So let’s joyfully be part of the minority this week who take time to give thanks to the Creator and Provider of all good things. Let’s make sure that the majority of our family is taking part in a ceremony of thanks. We may not be rich in money, but we are wealthy with blessings that the majority of the world is denied. Don’t be guilty of overlooking the slightest part of the extravagance we enjoy.

Thank You, Lord, for food. Thank You for the beautiful decorations. Thank You for taste and smell, for the ability to swallow and digest each delicious bite. Thank You for family and friends, for a roof over my head, for a stove and refrigerator, for a table to gather around.

These are a few of the things that inspire me to worship my Lord. How about you? What will you be thanking Him for this holiday time? Look around. What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? What do you notice that causes you to take time to thank Jesus? Are you part of the minority who will not fail to express sincere thanksgiving?
