Decisions

My brother used to tell a joke that went like this: “Do you have trouble making decisions?” “Well, yes and no.” That rang a bell with me because it’s hard to make decisions. And I get tired of making them sometimes. But life is shaped by our decisions and we need to give them careful consideration.

Of course, there are major decisions that affect our lives extremely. What career shall I choose? Who will be my mate for life? And the biggest decision of all, as Joshua put it in Joshua 24:15, “Choose you this day whom you will serve.” If we choose God, then other decisions should fall into line with His desires for us.

But today I’m thinking more about the smaller decisions we make each day. What shall I wear? What shall I eat? What shall I say? What chores shall I do? What projects shall I attend to?

LIke it or not, each answer affects how I feel. And feelings determine how much I accomplish in a day or a week. At the end of a day, I always look back to reflect on what I’ve accomplished. Even if it’s just laundry, that’s something. But for me, doing something creative helps stimulate me to achieve more. So this morning I lay in bed, as I do each morning, making decisions about the day. What shall I wear? What shall I cook? What telephone calls shall I make? Who needs prayer?

Out of that reflection came this blog. I’ve been a little lazy and uninspired lately about writing. But I’m glad to be back on track. I”ll be glad to list this blog as one of many small accomplishments today.

How about you? Are you aware of the significance of even small decisions? Do you have big or small decisions to make today? Are you praying earnestly about them? Are you committed to honoring God in each one?
