Looking Forward

Our family is scattered all across the United States. Well, even the world at times. So I’m looking forward to a rare family get-together in June. It will include all of our children and their spouses, as well as our siblings and their spouses. I don’t think this has ever happened before, so it’s really special! We’re celebrating my husband and I turning 80.

Strangely enough, this morning I found myself looking even beyond this to the next big event. In a couple of years my husband and I will celebrate our 60th anniversary and I have an idea of what I’d like to do for that. But I don’t want to be thinking in the future so much that I miss the joy of today, or at least the special occasion next month.

We need to relish the opportunities of today. And if the events are too painful, we can live in the light of what’s to come and it helps us get through the present. Jesus endured terrible things by thinking of “the joy set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2). So looking forward is sometimes the best thing to do. And thankfully for the Christian, we can always know that the best is yet to come. There are good things ahead. If not here and now, at least in Heaven.

What are you enjoying today? Or enduring today? What are you looking forward to? A family gathering? Sunday School class next Sunday? A picnic in the park? Seeing a friend? Or how about anticipating the Lord’s return? Now that’s an exciting prospect! And eternity in Heaven is the best of all. Do you have your mind and heart set on that today?

  1. I just celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary – I did so without my husband who is in the final stage of Alzheimers and has been unresponsive for 19 months. To be able to go back to my home farm (80 miles southeast of Fargo) and show my granddaughters where we were married ( I twice sang the solo “I Will Greet the Day With Singing” at that country church) and spend a day and overnight with them mowing and cutting up wood on the farm was special. God provided the outdoor beauty with great weather and just getting away from the stress was a special anniversary gift!
