Where Is God?
Where is God? Literally – where is He? One answer is, “He’s in heaven.” When Jesus talked about God, He referred to Him as being there. He taught his disciples to pray, starting with “Our Father who art in heaven…” But where is Heaven? Doesn’t it seem far away? Is God remote? Can we really communicate with Him?
We have access to God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was here on earth, He spent time communicating with His Father in prayer. And He taught His followers to do the same. But when He went away, He left sadness in His wake. Ah, but the Holy Spirit was sent to connect us with Jesus and His Father.
Here is His promise: “I shall ask the Father to give you someone else to stand by you, to be with you always. I mean the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, for it can neither see nor recognise that Spirit. But you recognise him, for he is with you now and will be in your hearts. I am not going to leave you alone in the world—I am coming to you. In a very little while, the world will see me no more but you will see me, because I am really alive and you will be alive too. When that day comes, you will realise that I am in my Father, that you are in me, and I am in you” (John 14:15-20, J. B. Phillips).
In the middle of doubts, confusion, and troubles, it’s sometimes hard to believe. With all the noise of the world blaring in our ears, it’s hard to hear the still, small voice. But that doesn’t mean He’s not speaking. We just need to learn to listen better. Pull ourselves away from the distractions, saturate ourselves with the Word, and focus on God, who is in heaven and in us.
Jeremiah 29:13 ESV: “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” Matthew 28:20 ESV: “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 18:20 ESV: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” 1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV: “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” Psalm 23:4: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
These are just a few of the statements from God’s Word that reassure us. Are you listening? Are you encouraged? Can you answer the question, “Where Is God?”
